As Ukraine builds a new power grid architecture—one that is more flexible, digital, and resilient to threats—people remain the most valuable resource for the industry. The role of experts capable of ensuring energy system transformation and resilience was one of the key topics of the UA Energy international conference and exhibition, which opened on May 12 at the International Exhibition Center in Kyiv.

The event brought together representatives from the public sector, energy companies, international businesses, financial institutions, investors, and industry partners to discuss the restoration and development of a modern, resilient, and reliable energy system in Ukraine.

As part of UA Energy, Bogdan Sukhetsky, Interim Director General of Ukrhydroenergo, participated in a panel discussion on “Human Capital Development for Ukraine’s New Energy System” where he emphasized the key role of workforce training in times of transformation in the energy sector.

In his speech, he highlighted that multidisciplinary professionals capable of working at the intersection of conventional power generation, digital technologies, automation, cybersecurity, and renewables are what the energy sector needs today.

“The energy system resilience doesn’t only depend on equipment—it also depends on competent people. That’s why investing in workforce development is just as important today as investing in infrastructure and technology,” noted Bogdan Sukhetskyi.

He also emphasized the importance of international cooperation, the alignment with European standards, and the development of an inclusive human resources policy.   Continuous staff training, collaboration with universities, and development of a new generation of energy professionals are a particular priority.

After all, it is adaptability and versatility of these professionals that will form the new foundation for the country’s energy resilience and security in the post-war reconstruction period.
