Launching the circulation of guarantees of origin is a challenging path that Ukraine must undertake. Through the efforts of the specialists from the National Commission and in fulfilment of contractual obligations to the EU and the Energy Community regarding the implementation of guarantees of origin, Ukraine is expected to launch an auction for the sale of guarantees of origin (GO) for electricity by mid-September this year.

This will allow Ukrhydroenergo to gain an additional source of income from selling GOs.

This opens opportunities for consumers, empowering them to optimize taxation related to environmental taxes or emission quotas. It also allows for the optimization of the taxation of importers of goods from third countries into the EU (electricity, cement, iron, steel, aluminium, and fertilizers) by balancing the carbon tax within the framework of the carbon border adjustment mechanism.

Most importantly, amid the threats of global warming and the global fight for clean air, the free circulation of GOs will stimulate the development of environmentally friendly energy. This will allow consumers to consciously choose their energy source, fostering a sense of hope and optimism. It will also be a significant argument for using 'clean' energy.

"This is a new product for us. But we are confident that it will capture a significant market share. Finally, the core mission of our company – generating environmentally clean energy – will be duly recognized. We will be able to direct the funds received from the sale of guarantees of origin towards the restoration, modernization of equipment, and development of the company," notes Bogdan Sukhetskyi, Deputy General Director for Commercial Activities at Ukrhydroenergo.
