A report “Towards a green transition of the energy sector in Ukraine” by UNDP has been released, revealing that the country's energy system is highly vulnerable and is running in emergency mode with little safety margin for both power grids and generation.
Analysts from UNDP have cited that the generation capacity has decreased from 37.6 GW to 18.3 GW as of 30 April 2023 and available hydropower generation has decreased by 29% from 6.6 GW to 4.7 GW.
The World Bank estimates that the damage caused to the electricity, gas, heat and coal mining infrastructure exceeds USD 10 billion and is continuing to grow.
However, in the medium term, UNDP predicts that the loss of outdated coal generation could lead to the opportunity to replace it with greener alternatives and decentralise generating capacity.
